PANAMA CITY- This week's Golden Apple award winner teaches math at North Bay Haven Charter Academy. Steve Beck was nominated by a student who writes: "He makes math fun, he likes to joke around and he's overall an awesome teacher!"
Mr. Beck loves math, but more than than, he loves his students. "They make me laugh, they bring a lot of joy into my life," he said. "Mr. Beck is one of those teachers that kids never forget. It really comes down to one thing with him, it's about relationships. He gets the most out of his students because he really knows how to build relationships with kids," said North Bay Haven Principal Meredith Higgins.
Students say he can make them laugh during even the most difficult lesson. "He makes it easier to understand by joking around. He thinks of different ways for everybody to learn," said Sarah Nichole. "I feel that if we are having a good time we are more apt to learn," said Mr. Beck. "He is like the best teacher ever," said Ashleigh Whitten.
"He just tries very creative ways to make math real to kids so they can see it and visualize it, so it's not just an abstraction. He realizes, especially with middle school kids, that they need that in order to make the math something that they can understand and retain as they move forward," said Mrs. Higgins. "With algebra, kids are just beginning to think abstractly and moving away from concrete. They are beginning to think algebraically and I like being on the entry level of helping kids to discover that," said Mr. Beck.
Congratulations to Steve Beck, this week's Golden Apple award- winning teacher. "Math is so crucial and it's such a critical area. It goes over into so many areas of life and if you can give kids an understanding of that it just opens so many opportunities for them."
