The Panama City Rescue Mission is near capacity on this chilly morning as the area’s growing homeless population deals with the approaching winter.
The community resource center task force is charged with taking a closer look at the homeless issue in downtown Panama City. Mayor Greg Brudnicki is researching the possibility of building a $2 million dollar multi-use shelter in the 231 industrial park. Brudnicki wants to relocate the Panama City Rescue Mission to that site, but some task force member does not think that will solve the problem.
Task force members also discussed Sheriff Frank McKeithen’s report and the Panama City Police Department’s own research, showing officers responded to 7500 calls last year within 2500 feet of the mission.
