FL Board of Ed Toughens 10th-grade FCAT Standards

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The state Board of Education has approved a new set of passing scores for Florida's standardized test.

The board voted unanimously in favor of the scores needed to pass the revised Florida Comprehensive Test during a conference call on Monday.

Following Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson's recommendations, the score needed to pass the FCAT 10th grade reading exam will now be 245 points. That is slightly higher than what a panel of education and community leaders had recommended.

Scores were set for the math and reading sections of the exam for grade levels three through 10.

Education officials say the new scores will help ensure students are prepared for college and a career. Some are concerned the scores are being set too high and that more children will fail.

From what I've heard, the state will no longer use the FCAT in 2014. They will switch from standardized tests to End of Course exams. However, if a student takes an 18-week course (for ex. Biology) in the Fall, then the end-of-course exam will not be given to any students until May or June. Florida has ruined their education system. It is no wonder that so many teachers are leaving the state of Florida to go to other states. Work in a different state with better pay and tenure? I'd leave, too!

Commissioner@fldoe.org - Email the commissioners to get rid of the FCAT. Don't take it out on the schools. Complain to the Board of Education. GET RID OF FCAT. USE IT AS AN ASSESSMENT NOT AS A PASS OR FAIL TEST. FLORIDA COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT TEST (FCAT)

The joke is that FCAT stand for F***** Can't Answer That. Let's see if the board can pass it. The test is being used for the wrong answer go to any other state, and the standardized test is being used to see where improvement can be made in the class, not to pass/fail a student. Government says they care about education, so get rid of the pass/fail for the test, use it for what it was originally made for to help students not hurt them.

"I am not happy" of hearing the FCAT scoring changing to a higher test score !!!!! The commissioner needs to think of these children who are striving to pass the test, and now, it problemly will frustrate them even more to try, if they do not quit school. My daughter is in 3rd grade and I think it's not fair of them having to test for FCAT. I feel if they should be tested for FCAT, than there's needs to be a beginning, middle and ending for testing. Not relying on their teachers who are pushing themselves and the children hard everyday to meet the requirements of the FCAT. But they're stuck with just the ending FCAT test in the month of April or May. "IT TOTALLY IS NOT FAIR!!!" WHAT CAN WE AS PARENTS DO FOR OUR CHILDREN WHO ARE PUT THROUGH THE FCAT TESTING???? CAN ANYONE GIVE ANY INFORMATION, BESIDE JUST WRITING TO THE COMMISSIONER?? I have passed this email as well as news link to other parents. Crossing my fingers of just maybe of finding something.

Standardized tests are just a way to punish teachers and students and to get out of paying merit pay. It should be MANDATORY that the board and all school administrators TAKE this SAME test. Guaranteed 80% or more of them will FAIL this 10th grade test! Teachers are now teaching students on how to JUST PASS THE TEST, instead of a good rounded education. We should ALL be against standardized testing and force the adminstrators to first take this test before pushing it on teachers and students.

FCAT NEEDS TO BE GONE. CANT HELP THAT TEACHERS ARE NOT INTO THEIR TEACHING AS IN THE PAST AND THE TEST TO ME IS STUPID AND A WASTE OF TAX DOLLARS TO CREATE. NO MORE FCAT.PUT THAT MONEY INTO BETTER FOODS IN THE SCHOOL SO THAT THE NURSES DONT SEND HOME STUPID LETTERS ABOUT OBESE KIDS, AND PUT THE MONEY INTO MAKING PLAYGROUNDS IN THE SCHOOL SO THE STUDENTS CAN HAVE THE BREATHER THEY DESERVE JUST LIKE ANY FULL TIME EMPLOYEE. A LOT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED AND I BELIEVE IF MORE PEOPLE VOUCHED FOR IT, WE MAY BE ABLE TO SEE SOME CHANGES!
