MIAMI -- The defense attorney for an elderly Miami imam charged with supporting Pakistani terrorists is asking that people not prejudge the Muslim cleric.
Attorney Khurrum Wahid said 76-year-old Hafiz Muhammed Sher Ali Khan will plead not guilty to charges of providing material support to the Pakistani Taliban.
Khan and one of his sons, 24-year-old Izhar Khan, appeared in court Monday for the first time since their indictment was unsealed. Neither entered a plea.
The younger Khan, also a Muslim imam, was given time to hire a lawyer. Another son, 37-year-old Irfan Khan, was to appear in Los Angeles federal court Monday.
They are among six people charged with funneling at least $50,000 to the Pakistani Taliban, which violently opposes Pakistan's government and the U.S. Three of those charged remain in Pakistan.
