Waller Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Wins Golden Apple Award

This week's Golden Apple Award winner is a kindergarten teacher at Waller Elementary School in Youngstown.

After more than three decades of teaching at the same school, Mrs. Shipes is more than a mainstay; she's a pillar for the school.

Donna Shipes, kindergarten teacher, said, “Been 35 years at this same school and what makes that so nice is I teach kids, I taught their parents.”

Mrs. Shipes wasn't much older than these kindergartners when she knew she wanted to become a teacher.

“I had a second grade teacher, Ms. Boswell, that led me into this profession.”

She uses hands-on activities to make learning fun and sometimes even tasty.

“For the last two weeks we've been learning about bees, so today we are pretending to be nurse bees. We are feeding our baby bees. We want to make kindergarten fun because for many of them, this is their first learning experience for school and we want them to be lifelong learners.”

Peggy Bunch, Principal, added, “Mrs. Shipes has a way of speaking with children. They respond to her immediately. She doesn’t take the six weeks to get to know kids, they respond to her immediately. She has an awesome classroom environment, the children learn the tasks early, and they get on it and they have excelled.”

Congratulations to Mrs. Shipes, this week's Golden Apple Award winning teacher. The Golden Apple Award is brought to you by our community partner, John Lee Nissan Mazda.
