If losing weight tops your list of resolutions, this year you might be surprised to find out that there are ways to boost your metabolism without hitting the gym.
Registered dieticians say the first thing you can do to boost your metabolism when you eat breakfast.
"After a night's sleep when your body is burning calories and working hard to keep you alive while you sleep, you need to fuel it the next day you need to "break that fast." and if you don't do that your body essentially says "ok, I don't have the fuel I need to function, so I am going to have to lower the metabolism a little bit to survive,” said Kristin Kirkpatrick, R.D.
Kirkpatrick says eating something that is high in fiber, like a whole grain cereal, or something high in protein, like eggs are good choices.
She says eggs may help to reduce cravings, too.
Kirkpatrick says drinking water may help boost metabolism by increasing cell metabolism.
Shellfish are packed with iron, which carries oxygen our muscles need to burn fat and Kirkpatrick says adding beans to your diet is a good way to jump start your metabolism too.
"Beans have something called resistant starch, which is starch that is a little bit more difficult for our body to digest. So, the more difficult it is for our body to digest something, the more energy it's going to take to actually do that."
Kirkpatrick says jalapeno peppers may also boost metabolism. She says one study found they increase fat oxidation- especially around the belly.
