Bay County to Layoff Fire Dept Employees

Bay County officials are set to lay-off four county fire department employees, including three battalion chiefs.

Even with an increase in fire services taxes for unincorporated Bay County, and a loan, the fire department will come up about $300,000 dollars short next year. Decreasing property values are to blame. County officials are cutting 11 year veteran Chad Harrell, who was earning about $64,000 a year, 9 year veteran Daniel Lentz at $59,000 a year, and 14 year veteran Al Ford who made more than $74,000 a year.

The cuts will not affect the new $2.8 million dollar west end fire station, which is scheduled to open next month.

There is so much more to this story. The "cherry picking" of the 3 Chiefs to be selected out of the 8 paid Chiefs is suspect. Pathetic management skills at Bay County Fire District. The reasoning behind this should be pursued.

I have been in Bay County a very long time and I can tell you that the Asst County Manager is getting in over his head. Why didn't that "Yes man" Mark Bowen come to the forefront and stand up for his people? Who is running the dept? Bowen or Majka. Maybe the county should layoff Bowen and save two of the fire fighters positions.

Take and let go the EOC directors thats not a fire fighting position. The Batt Chief's do more that Eoc director. If the Bay County wouldn't ran all there volunteers off they would still have Firefighters in the county

Let me get this right,Bay County fire chief rather spend 2.8 million dollar's for a fire station that will house one firefighter. Then keep 3 veteran firefighters. Seems like someone doesn't have there priorty's straight.
