Fulton County, Ga. commission rejects tax increase

ATLANTA (AP) -- Fulton County commissioners have rejected a countywide property tax increase aimed at dealing with a possible $40 million budget shortfall.
County Manager Zachary Williams urged the commission on Wednesday to start the process for increasing the Fulton County millage rate this fall to ensure the county has the same level of services in 2012.
The commission voted for an increase only for the unincorporated section of the county.
Williams says the commission's rejection of a tax increase will mean a projected $20 million shortfall for 2012 that could jump to $40 million if enough property owners who appeal tax bills get their current values lowered.
