MCDONOUGH, Ga. (AP) -- A coroner says a 14-year-old boy who was hit by a police car in Henry County has died of his injuries.
Henry County Coroner Donald Cleveland told WSB-TV Chandler Jacob Weems died Sunday morning at a hospital after he was hit by a patrol car while riding his bicycle.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.
Henry County police Sgt. Joey Smith said Saturday that the officer could not avoid the accident and that the officer was very distraught. Smith says the boy exited a driveway into the patrol car's path on Saturday.
Smith issued a statement on behalf of the department Sunday expressing sympathy to Weems' family for their loss.
Henry County police say the officer who hit the teen has taken a leave of absence from the department.
