LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Two people were struck and killed by a train after the vehicle they were traveling in went through the lighted gates at a railroad crossing near Lakeland.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash occurred about 11:40 p.m. Sunday.
The names of the deceased were not available Monday morning.
Troopers say the vehicle continued across the tracks even though the lighted crossing gates were activated to indicate that a train was approaching. The train's horn was also blaring to warn to the driver.
According to FHP, the train hit the Nissan Pathfinder on the driver's side, pushing it off the tracks and into a nearby railroad control junction box, where it caught fire. Both occupants were trapped inside.
An investigation is continuing and FHP asks any witnesses to call 863-413-3510.
