30 People Arrested in Check Cashing Scam

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say 30 people have been arrested in connection with a check cashing scam involving the Lee County School District's payroll account.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Fort Myers Police Department were alerted in April after school district officials learned several people had used counterfeit checks with the district's payroll account number.
The checks looked authentic but had been written to people who were not employed by the district.
Detectives discovered where the checks had been cashed and identified the suspects through surveillance video and the identification they used to cash them.
Thirty men and woman have been arrested on charges of uttering a false instrument and grand theft. None of them are employed by the school board. It is unclear how they obtained the payroll account information.
