A judge gave former Covington County Probate Judge Sherrie Phillips of Andalusia a sentence of three years in prison followed by seven years of probation for her ethics and theft convictions.
Phillips was convicted in a case involving $1.8 million taken from an estate her office was handling. She claimed she borrowed nearly $517,000, but returned all but $917 when the attorney general's office issued a subpoena for records of the estate.
At sentencing Wednesday, Montgomery County Circuit Judge Charles Price said Phillips became a victim of greed. Price said he taught Phillips when she was a student at Jones Law School.
Phillips' attorney said he expected his client to be released on an appeal bond.
