Richmond County school officials say nearly 30 students used a stolen computer password to alter their grades over the summer.

Richmond County Executive Director for High Schools Lynn Warr said Tuesday it's likely one student swiped the teacher's password and then offered it to other students. The school system was alerted to the cheating in October after the state Department of Education noticed unusual grade changes in Georgia Virtual School classes.

Warr said the students' scores were changed to 100 within just minutes of receiving failing grades. In at least one case, a student was given a grade for a test she never took.

The students involved were suspended for five to 10 days and lost credit for the class they took. Warr said the student who stole the password has been withdrawn from the school district by his mother and sent to live with his father in Arkansas.
