JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) -- Clayton County will not back a $40 million bond for Southern Regional Medical Center, which faces closing if funding isn't found.
The county's board of commissioners voted Tuesday night 3-2 against a proposal that would have helped the 331-bed Riverdale hospital avoid defaulting on loans at the end of the month. Hospital President and CEO Edward Bonn told the board that the hospital costs $20 million a month to operate.
He said the hospital ended the 2008 fiscal year with a $7.07 million loss.
Bonn said the hospital will look into federal funding or layoffs to avoid closing
