Individual and corporate donations are financing an Alabama-led effort to place a bronze statue of Helen Keller in the U.S. Capitol complex.

The likeness of Keller at age seven is set to be placed in the Capitol Visitors Complex.

Alabama began the effort to finance the project several years ago when Gov. Bob Riley was in Congress.

Each state can memorialize two of its most significant residents at the Capitol in marble or bronze. For decades the selections were irreversible. That meant very few women, minorities or recent figures were represented. Congress changed that law in 2002, leaving states free to swap out statues.

The donor list for the project includes many well-known names in Alabama philanthropy, as well as descendants of Keller.
