Thieves steal vases from cemetery

Police have asked scrap metal dealers to be on the lookout for anyone trying to sell bronzed vases stolen from a DeKalb County cemetery.

Thieves took about 200 of the $250 vases, used to hold flowers on top of grave markers, from Melwood Cemetery in Stone Mountain last week.

Melwood spokeswoman Cheryl Brown said the theft was discovered Christmas Day, when a family reported that the vase at the grave they visited was gone.

Brown says the crooks "are stealing from the dead, but they're hurting the families, too."

She says police were asked to step up night patrols near the cemetery to deter more thefts.
