Decatur police are asking the FBI for help in determining how much confiscated drug money is missing in an alleged theft by a former police supervisor.

The department said Friday it had asked the FBI to conduct an independent audit and investigation into the case of former police Sgt. Faron White. The audit is to determine exactly how much money is missing from the crime unit that White used to head.

White is accused of staging his own disappearance and fleeing to Las Vegas, where he was arrested. Investigators say White was trying to cover up the theft of at least $2,500 from the department, but an alleged accomplice has said $70,000 could be missing.

White has agreed to return to Alabama from Nevada to face charges.
