Former Ala. congressman Cramer joins lobbying firm

Former north Alabama congressman Bud Cramer is trading in a nearly 20-year legislative career to become chairman of a prominent Washington lobbying firm.

Cramer, from Huntsville, said in a statement Monday he was excited about joining Wexler and Walker Public Policy Associates and would apply his bipartisan legislative style to his new job representing private clients.

Cramer, a Democrat who was Alabama's most senior House member, surprised many when he announced his retirement last year. Because of his experience and close relationships, he was one of the most prized recruits among lobbying firms.

Under House ethics rules, he will not be allowed to personally lobby his former Capitol Hill colleagues for one year, but he can provide behind-the-scenes guidance.
