A Palestinian couple with six children is trying to block the government's attempt to deport them and their oldest son from their longtime home in Alabama.

Mohammad Mohammad, wife Sana Alsayed and their 18-year-old son, Imad Mohammad, were arrested Jan. 12 at their home in Hoover as the couple's five younger children -- all U.S. citizens -- looked on.

The couple has filed papers arguing they are stateless as Palestinians and have nowhere else to go. The father was freed to care for the younger children, but the mother and the oldest son remain in custody.

A judge in Birmingham set a Thursday deadline for the government to show just cause for holding the mother and son. They have been in the United States since 1993.
