Investigators have ruled the death of a Houston County couple inside their home on U.S. Highway 231 a murder-suicide.

Sheriff Andy Hughes said at a press conference Wednesday that 69-year-old John Coskrey shot his wife, 65-year-old Carolyn, then himself. Both were found dead about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A relative made an emergency call to the residence at about 1 p.m., saying two people may have been shot.

Hughes said investigators found a handgun and shotgun believed to be used in the shooting.

The Coskreys previously owned land where the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds are now located. Coskrey held several events on the land before the peanut festival moved from the Houston County Farm Center to its current location.
