A 27-year-old man has been charged in the death of a prominent cancer researcher, Dr. Eugenia Calle, in her Atlanta penthouse apartment.
The 57-year-old Calle's body was found in her apartment about 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Authorities say Jamal Thompson, also known as Shamal Thompson, was arrested and charged Thursday morning when he was tracked down in southwest Atlanta after using one of Calle's credit cards.
Atlanta police Lt. Keith Meadows says there appeared to be a struggle, and he believed the victim died from blunt force trauma to the head. He says she may have been dead up to 12 hours before her body was found.
Calle was a physician and a cancer researcher who had been director of Analytic Epidemiology for the American Cancer Society since 1994. She retired last month.
