A former bank official has been charged with bank fraud.

U.S. Attorney Alice Martin in Birmingham said Thursday, a 2-count indictment was returned against 66-year-old Helen Harrison Phillips of Columbiana.

She was the former president of First National Bank of Shelby County.

Martin said in Oct. 2000, Phillips' housekeeper obtained a loan for $45,000 and Phillips used the money to pay more than $32,000 to the IRS and for personal use.

The indictment stated Phillips arranged to repay the loan and hide it from federal auditors.

No trial date was announced.
