Suspicious package shuts down area around Dobbins

A car that was left just outside Dobbins Air Reserve Base with a suspicious package inside led authorities to shut down traffic on a busy highway for most of the evening.

Police said a robot was used to open the car's trunk and a door, and the vehicle went up in flames late Wednesday night after military personnel set off explosions to destroy the package.

Marietta police spokesman Mark Bishop said officers set up a perimeter on Cobb Parkway and kept traffic at least 5,000 feet from the base while the investigation was in progress. He said some buildings on the base also were evacuated.
