Alabama River Newsprint has announced it will layoff 167 employees at its plant in Monroe County.

The company said the Purdue Hill facility would cease operations in early June. A spokeswoman for the newsprint maker's parent firm, AbitibiBowater, blamed the closure on declining global demand for newsprint and escalating energy costs.

AbitibiBowater Inc., was created in 2007 in a combination of U.S.-based Bowater and Canada's Abitibi-Consolidated.
