A $61 million project to rebuild part of Interstate 59 in Etowah County may not go to an Alabama firm even though it's being funded out of money the state received in the federal stimulus package.

It's the largest road project in Alabama so far from the stimulus funds. Bids will be opened Friday.

State highway officials are requiring that the 11 miles of I-59 be rebuilt with concrete. They say concrete is on the highway now and is more durable than asphalt. But Alabama contractors say there are no firms in the state that deal with concrete and the stimulus money will end up going out of state.
