The Coast Guard has called off a search for two swimmers reported to have been in trouble in a strong current near Tybee Island about 250 yards from the beach.

Chief James Bodenrader said the call came from a person who reported two people struggling to swim back to short on Sunday. He said the person apparently had returned to his condominium to make the report and when he went back to the beach the swimmers were nowhere to be seen.

The chief said the swimmers apparently got out of the water while the person was making his report. He said the Coast Guard searched the area with helicopters and a boat.
