ATHENS, Ala. (AP) -- Organizers in one north Alabama city are planning a festival to celebrate fried food.
A downtown revitalization group in Athens is planning the "Athens Grease Festival" for Sept. 29. Spirit of Athens director Trisha Black tells The News-Courier the group wants to both bring people downtown and to celebrate the town's namesake of Athens, Greece.
Alabama is one of the nation's fattest states and has some of the nation's worst obesity rates.
Statistics from 2010 show that more than one-third of the state's 4.9 million residents are considered obese, and fried foods often share part of the blame.
But organizers are hoping the festival brings families to Athens. Mayor Ronnie Marks says he's excited about the possibility since the event could lure visitors from across the region.
