BEAR CREEK, Ala. (AP) -- A 9-year-old Gardendale girl has drowned after pulling her younger brother to safety in a pond near Haleyville.
The chief of the Bear Creek Fire Department, Rob Taylor, says Brandi Odom was swimming with her brothers, age 7 and 6, late Sunday afternoon when the 7-year-old got into deep water. She went out and pulled her brother in by the arm. Then she got into trouble herself and went under.
He said rescue workers arrived to find the girl's grandmother doing CPR, but the girl was pronounced dead at a hospital in Haleyville.
