MOBILE, Ala. -- Swarms of termites are being reported in Mobile, where the bugs are gathering to mate.

Although most common during the spring, termite swarming can happen anytime the region experiences warm days, cool nights and rainfall.

Agents with the Mobile County Extension Service say the swarms typically occur when a colony's population gets too big, causing male and female termites to swarm and mate, forming new colonies.

Native termites tend to swarm during the day, while the highly destructive Formosan termites are most likely to swarm at night.

Pest control experts say that swarm season is the best time for homeowners to have termite inspections, so the exterminators can locate the source.
