Deal Moves to Oust Miller County, GA School Board

ATLANTA (AP) -- Gov. Nathan Deal has ousted the entire Miller County school board, an unprecedented moved under a new law passed by legislators last year.
Deal's office said Monday he has agreed to remove all five board members for the 1,100-student school district after the state Board of Education recommended last month that the board be removed. Deal set up a committee to nominate new board members to serve out each member's remaining term.
The state board's recommendation stemmed from evidence that the Miller County board quarreled with the superintendent, threatened to fire employees and hurled expletives at each other in meetings.
Miller County is on probation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in part because of the board. School district officials did not immediately return a request for comment.
