DOTHAN, Ala. City commissioners in Dothan are weighing a proposed ordinance that would allow people to drink alcohol outdoors during special events.
The proposal is on the agenda for discussion at the commission's scheduled meeting Tuesday. It could be brought up for a vote in two weeks.
An Alabama law passed in 2012 allows cities to create entertainment districts where alcohol can be consumed outdoors. Such districts have already been created in Auburn, Montgomery, Decatur, Orange Beach and Huntsville.
The Dothan ordinance would allow patrons to buy alcohol at licensed downtown businesses and then take their drinks outside during special occasions such as the city's popular FosterFest events in the spring and summer.
