TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Environmental groups are suing the Army Corps of Engineers, the state and a water management district over algae blooms that are polluting southwest Florida's Caloosahatchee River.
The environmental legal organization Earthjustice filed the suit Monday in U.S. District Court in Tallahassee.
It alleges the Corps is violating state and South Florida Water Management District regulations by diverting water from Lake Okeechobee that should be going into the river to sugar cane fields.
A Corps spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and water management district had no immediate comment.
The suit was filed on behalf of the Florida Wildlife Federation, Conservancy of Southwest Florida and Environmental Confederation of Southwest Florida.
