MIAMI (AP) -- A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for beating and strangling his girlfriend.
A Miami-Dade judge sentenced 33-year-old Juan Carlos Portieles on Tuesday after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder.
The Miami Herald reports that Portieles turned himself into police in October 2009, telling detectives he had killed 18-year-old Jaclyn Torrealba after an argument. Portieles, known as DJ Seasunz in the Miami nightclub circuit, had driven around for hours with Torrealba's dead body, which was still in his car when he turned himself in.
Portieles' attorney agreed that his client killed Torrealba but argued the murder was not pre-meditated.
Prosecutors argued that the way Portieles killed Torrealba -- with his bare hands -- would have taken time, meaning Portieles thought about his actions.
