Man Guilty in Girlfriend's Death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- A Jacksonville man has been convicted of second-degree murder in the strangling death of his girlfriend.
Duval County prosecutors had been seeking a first-degree murder conviction, while attorneys for 27-year-old Kevin Christopher Jones had been hoping jurors would come back with a manslaughter verdict Wednesday. He faces possible life in prison at his sentencing.
Authorities say Jones stabbed his girlfriend, 26-year-old Latoya Jones, during an argument at their apartment and then strangled her while they were driving to the hospital. The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/ZEPVqT) reports the two were not related and were never married, despite having the same last name.
Defense attorneys conceded that their client was responsible for the death of Latoya Jones but told jurors it was not a premeditated or intentional killing.
