Newton Police Chief

NEWTON, Ala. (AP) -- A former military police officer has been hired as the new police chief for the southeast Alabama town of Newton.
The Dothan Eagle reports new chief James Gresham has more than three decades of law enforcement experience. He began his career as an Army MP at Fort Hood, Texas, and recently retired after serving as interim police chief in Daleville.
Before the Newton town council appointed Gresham to serve permanently, he had been serving on an interim basis since former chief John Beistline resigned in April.
Newton Mayor Lehman Irby praised both Gresham's work ethic and his willingness to serve a town that struggles to offer competitive pay and benefits.
