Officials Look to Prevent Escapes Through Forgery

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- No matter what officials do to tighten procedures on releasing prisoners, there's always a chance that someone will come up with a scheme to be released through fraudulent orders.
That's what lawmakers were told Wednesday by court, law enforcement and corrections officials as a Senate committee examines release procedures after two murderers were mistakenly set free.
Officials outlined steps that have already been taken to make sure other prisoners don't use forged release documents in escape attempts. They also say the conversion to electronic filing will help make the process more secure.
But the committee was told that prisoners have a lot of time on their hands and they'll be constantly trying to figure out how to beat the system.
