Recruiting Jews

DOTHAN, Ala. A program to recruit Jews to move to a Southern town is revitalizing a once-dying Jewish congregation in Alabama.
Six new Jewish families with 18 people have moved to Dothan, Ala., because of the program, which offers families as much as $50,000 to relocate to the city.
The Jewish businessman who created the program, Larry Blumberg, says having new families is refreshing for his synagogue, Temple Emanu-El.
Blumberg created a $1 million fund to help recruit Jewish families to move to the city five years ago. Worship attendance is now about double what it was then.
Rabbi Lynne Goldsmith says the program could be a blueprint to encourage Jews to move to other Southern towns with Jewish congregations that are fighting to remain open.
