TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A Tampa Bay area teen has been sentenced to life in prison for killing another teen during a dice game.
A Hillsborough County judge sentenced 19-year-old Reginald Jenkins on Friday. He was convicted last month of first-degree murder, attempted murder and attempted robbery with a firearm.
Authorities say 17-year-old Byron Patty was at a dice game in August 2010 when Jenkins tried to rob another teen. Prosecutors say Jenkins fired his .357 Magnum, hitting 19-year-old Alonzo Jones in the shoulder. The bullet passed through Jones and hit Patty, who died from the wound.
The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/IhI1iT) reports that Jenkins testified that he was not the robber. He said he fled the area after the shooting because he was concerned for his own safety.
