Teen dies in Alabama's surf

GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) -- Authorities say one teenager is dead and another is hospitalized after being caught in the surf in Gulf Shores.

Police say a 14-year-old boy died while swimming near the beach pavilion at Gulf State Park on Wednesday. A 16-year-old boy was listed in critical condition after being caught in the surf while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico several miles away.

Officials haven't released the name of either teen.

City spokesman Grant Brown says red flags have been flying for several days in Gulf Shores because of dangerous currents. Those flags are a warning for people to stay out of the surf.
