FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- A grand jury has returned first-degree murder indictments against two men in the deaths of two bicyclists in southern Broward County.
Authorities say 26-year-old Obrian Ricardo Oakley and 25-year-old Sadik Rashad Baxter were trying to break into cars in a Cooper City neighborhood Aug. 5 when residents spotted them and called 911. Oakley fled in his car and struck 61-year-old Christopher McConnell and 60-year-old Dean Amelkin as they rode bicycles nearby.
The Miami Herald reports the grand jury indictments were delivered Thursday. Both men are being held in jail without bond. They face five counts of burglary. Oakley is also charged with vehicular homicide and fleeing from police.
Authorities say Oakley ran after the car crash and hid from police for hours. Baxter was arrested at the burglary scene.
