MANATEE, Fla. (AP) -- The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee is planning a $50 million expansion that business leaders hope will help revitalize the local economy and attract more students.
The Bradenton Herald reports the university's plan expects to double enrollment and enhance higher education opportunities over the next five years.
Business leaders also predict the expansion could transform a blighted corridor now filled with empty storefronts and lots.
The plan calls for a new $25 million academic hub with on-campus housing and an aquatic center. USF will also develop commercial property through public-private partnerships in the area.
