SALEM, Ala. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating a house fire that claimed the life of a 45-year-old Salem woman.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that the woman was alone and in her home when fire crews arrived at the blaze Thursday morning.
Lee County Coroner Bill Harris says a water meter reader in the neighborhood noticed smoke coming from the residence and called 911. By the time firefighters arrived, the flames were breaking through the roof. The woman was found unresponsive in her living room area.
Harris declined to release the woman's name until her family is notified. Her body was taken to Montgomery to determine the cause of death.
