TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The state Board of Education has approved a new set of passing scores for Florida's standardized test.

The board voted unanimously in favor of the scores needed to pass the revised Florida Comprehensive Test during a conference call on Monday.

Following Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson's recommendations, the score needed to pass the FCAT 10th grade reading exam will now be 245 points. That is slightly higher than what a panel of education and community leaders had recommended.

Scores were set for the math and reading sections of the exam for grade levels three through 10.

Education officials say the new scores will help ensure students are prepared for college and a career. Some are concerned the scores are being set too high and that more children will fail.

From what I've heard, the state will no longer use the FCAT in 2014. They will switch from standardized tests to End of Course exams. However, if a student takes an 18-week course (for ex. Biology) in the Fall, then the end-of-course exam will not be given to any students until May or June. Florida has ruined their education system. It is no wonder that so many teachers are leaving the state of Florida to go to other states. Work in a different state with better pay and tenure? I'd leave, too!

Commissioner@fldoe.org - Email the commissioners to get rid of the FCAT. Don't take it out on the schools. Complain to the Board of Education. GET RID OF FCAT. USE IT AS AN ASSESSMENT NOT AS A PASS OR FAIL TEST. FLORIDA COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT TEST (FCAT)

The joke is that FCAT stand for F***** Can't Answer That. Let's see if the board can pass it. The test is being used for the wrong answer go to any other state, and the standardized test is being used to see where improvement can be made in the class, not to pass/fail a student. Government says they care about education, so get rid of the pass/fail for the test, use it for what it was originally made for to help students not hurt them.
