Here are Dan and Jackie’s Top 5 training tips: 1. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! Don’t wait until race day! By then, it will be too late. Start drinking lots of water 2 days out. 2. Eat the right foods before and after the race. A slice of whole grain toast with peanut butter and a banana before the race is a great way to get the fuel your body needs. Be sure to train with your pre-race foods so your body is accustomed to the same foods on race day. After the race, a lean protein or your favorite protein bar is the best thing to help your muscles recover. 3. Strength Train. Strengthen your muscles to help prevent injury and potentially improve your performance on race day. 4. Get a workout buddy or join a running group. After the show, Dan and Jackie were each other’s best encouragement and motivator. They keep each other on track. 5. Set a pace! When participating in your first 5K or half marathon, it is important to pace yourself. Most people get overly excited and exhaust their energy in the first mile. Jackie does the “RunWalk” where she’ll run for 2 minutes and walk for one minute. Do what is comfortable for you.
Here is Dan's favorite recipes from a Biggest Loser cookbook with his own twist. It is a pre-race healthy pasta dish with chicken. Recipe: Makes 1 serving: Salt 1 1/2 tablespoons finely chopped yellow or white onion 2 small cloves garlic, minced 1 boneless chicken breast 1/2 cup canned crushed tomatoes 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves 1/2 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil Pinch of red-pepper flakes, or more to taste 2 ounces (one-fourth of an 8-ounce box) Nutrition Kitchen Angel Hair Style Golden Whole Soybean Pasta (Can substitute with whole wheat pasta) 1 to 2 teaspoons grated reduced-fat Parmesan cheese Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Meanwhile, lightly mist a small nonstick skillet with olive oil spray. Set over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 4 minutes, or until almost tender. (Do not brown.) Cut up and add the chicken. Increase the heat to medium high. Cook chicken until done. Reduce the heat to low. Add the tomatoes, oregano, and oil. Season with red-pepper flakes. When the water boils, add the pasta to the pot. Stir. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes, or until al dente. Drain and add to the skillet mixture. Toss to combine. Transfer to a serving bowl. Sprinkle with the cheese. Serve immediately.
Caramel Apples Ingredients: 5 small apples 5 wooden skewers 14 oz package of caramels (about 50) 2 Tbsp water Directions: Wash and dry apples well (if apples aren’t completely dry the coating will not stick) Insert sticks into stem end of apples; set aside Heat caramels and water in double boiler or microwave until melted smooth Dip apples into melted caramel, spooning caramel over apples to coat Allow excess caramel to drip off, scraping bottom if necessary Place on greased parchment or waxed paper Let stand about 15 minutes or until caramel sets
Candy Apples Ingredients: 5 small apples 5 wooden skewers 2 cups sugar ½ cup light corn syrup ¾ cup water 4 drops of food coloring Cinnamon stick Directions: Wash and dry apples well (if apples aren’t completely dry the coating will not stick) Insert sticks into stem end of apples; set aside Combine water, corn syrup and sugar in the top of a double boiler over medium-high heat Stir until the sugar dissolves and then continue to cook, without stirring until mixture reaches 250 degrees Wash down the sides of the pan with a wet pastry brush occasionally to prevent crystallization. Once the candy reaches 250 degrees add the cinnamon stick and food coloring and stir briefly to incorporate Continue to cook, washing down the sides, until it reaches 285 degrees Remove from the heat and stir the candy so that it is smooth and even. Dip apples into melted candy, spooning candy over apples to coat Allow excess candy to drip off, scraping bottom if necessary Place on greased parchment, waxed paper or foil Allow apples to cool at room temperature Candy apples are best enjoyed within 24 hours

Delightful Mother’s Day Morning Parfait Ingredients: ½ Can (6ox.) of frozen juice concentrate (Mom’s favorite flavor!) 14oz Sweetened Condensed Milk 16oz Whipped Topping Mom’s Favorite Fruit, sliced or cubed Fancy Glass 1. Combine juice concentrate and sweetened condensed milk until well blended. 2. Fold in the whipped topping until well incorporated, mixture should resemble yogurt. 3. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight, if possible. 4. Layer in your fancy glass sliced fruit, then whipped topping, fruit, whipped topping until fancy glass is filled. 5. Place on a plate. Mimosa Mocktail Ingredients Chill 1 bottle of Sparkling Cider Orange Juice Glass of Your Choice Fill ¼ glass with orange juice. Fill the rest of the glass with sparkling cider. Garnish with a fancy orange slice or strawberry. Easy Crepes Ingredients Ready Made Crepes Nutella or Chocolate Spread Your choice of sliced fruit or berries Powdered sugar Whipped Cream Ready-made crepes can be found in the produce section of many stores. Lay crepe on a plate. Simply add some chocolate spread, peanut butter, or jam for the first layer. Then add fruit. Roll the crepe and sprinkle some powdered sugar or whipped cream on the top.
