BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- The latest drought survey revealed a mixed bag of results in Alabama.

The U.S. Drought Monitor Survey shows 73% of the state is now under some stage of drought.

The Survey was released Thursday.

The worst category, D-2, covers approximately 2% of Alabama, mainly in northeast counties. The Monitor said D-1 or moderate drought conditions more than doubled in size and expanded toward Montgomery.

Experts said the expansion is due to dry conditions over the past 30-90 days.

The survey also notes the "near record to record low levels" of rivers and surface water storage areas across the Southeast
