The city of Huntsville is disputing about $350,000 in construction charges for the Madison County jail expansion.
Mayor Tommy Battle said Thursday night that an internal audit found that Lee Builders, the jail's general contractor, billed the city for coffee machines, gift cards, food and other items seemingly outside the scope of the construction contract.
Battle said final payment is being withheld until the billing questions are resolved. Battle said Lee Builders says it will look at all the bills. The 900-bed jail addition is almost $50 million over budget and three years behind schedule.
