Students at Holmes County High School were in a state of shock this morning. One of their classmates was killed in a traffic crash on the way to school.
The incident quickly sparked a buckle up campaign among the students.
A single vehicle crash at 7:30 Tuesday morning near the intersection of Sand Path Road and Mack Brock Lane claimed the life of 17-year-old Crystal M. Kneller. Highway Patrol investigators believe Kneller lost control of her SUV, running off the road and flipping onto the right side. The teenager was partially thrown from the vehicle.
Troopers say she wasn't wearing a seat belt. The news spread quickly at Holmes County High School where Kneller was in her junior year.
"We kept them in class with their teachers and told them over the intercom and sent counselors to the classroom where the students told us they needed help," Holmes County High Principal Janis Johnson said.
School administrators brought in extra help to handle the students who needed someone to talk to.
"Our counselors were available and we called in youth pastors and ministers from the surrounding churches."
Johnson says they're also hoping some good will come out of this tragedy.
"Just want them to remember to buckle up, because apparently this accident happened because she wasn't wearing her seat belt."
Apparently many of Crystal's classmates are already taking the message to heart. Officials say they will provide counseling for students as long as necessary.
