Bay County school board members have been looking for ways to cut $20.2 million out of next year's budget. They'd planned to get about $3.5 million by closing or repurposing several schools, but it looks like that plan may be going out the window.
For the past few weeks supporters of Millville Elementary have been showing up in groups at all the school boards meetings, trying to find out what is going to happen to their school.
Supt. James McCalister had proposed closing Millville and moving the students to other schools, but tonight he gave everyone some good news.
In front of a packed room at Immanuel Baptist Church in Millville, McCalister announced that he plans to present a balanced budget at Monday’s school board meeting that does not include closing or repurposing any schools.
Obviously some of the best news these parents and teachers have heard. Also, earlier this afternoon, board member Johnny Brock called McCalister and asked to add an item to Monday’s agenda.
Brock says he plans to make a motion to withdraw the proposed policy changes regarding the closing and repurposing of Millville, AD Harris High School, and Margaret K. Lewis Center.
Brock grew up in Millville and had family members that attended the elementary school. He says the board was at a standstill of where to go, but he knows there is another way to cut money without closing schools and moving kids around.
The board will have to vote on Brock's motion to withdraw the proposal. If it passes, the option of closing or repurposing those schools will be off the table completely while the board tries to figure out how to cut $20 million.
