The largest elementary school in Bay County is almost complete.

Deer Point Elementary school officials are excited about the progress of their school that's currently under construction.

The brand new school is located on the outskirts of Lynn Haven on Highway 2321, just off of Highway 231 near the Deer Point Lake subdivision.

Principal Lendy Willis says the school is about eighty-five percent complete.

Willis has been told the 155-thousand-square-foot facility could be finished as early as November. The move in date is set for sometime in December.

Construction crews are hard at work on the inside of the two-story building putting in wiring for computers. The media center will be the focus of the new school.

Once complete, the school will have room to house around 800 students. However, district officials are still determining zoning lines.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to start a school from the ground up because I know what the research says. I know what best practice in education is. Parents can be rest assured that if their child is rezoned to come to school here, it is going to be based on research, best practice and it's going to be a phenomenal place for kids."

Merritt Brown Middle School students will be the first occupants. They will move in starting in the spring of 2010 while their school’s 20-year- old heating and cooling system is replaced.

Then in August, it will be turned back into the elementary school.

If you're wondering, funding for the new Deer Point Elementary School comes from a completely different fund than the district's general fund.
