"A lot of it should be on the parents."

Aristotle Lawson is talking about the decision for whether schools should allow students to leave campus for lunch.

Bay County School Board member Pat Sabiston says some schools have a procedure to be followed even if it is a open campus.

"Students are supposed to have permission before they leave campus for lunch."

The permission comes from parents. They call in and put their son or daughter on a list to leave campus for lunch. The four students who were involved in Friday's car crash were from Rutherford High School.

They left school to go get fast food for lunch, but on their way back they got into an accident on North Lakewood Drive and Tyndall Parkway.

All four students were taken to a local hospital and had some injuries. Parker authorities still haven't released the names of the students involved in the car crash, but a girl, by the name of Megan Hatchell, who claims to have been a passenger in the car, commented on Newschannel 7's website to explain the situation.

She says she did not have permission from her parents to leave campus, but left anyway. The debate has left some local parents with mixed feelings.

"All the lunch should be closed and kids should not leave the campus."

"I really don't agree with it. I think they should stay on campus; it's too dangerous."

"You can get in an accident just as bad after school or before school as you can during school. I don't see a problem with it."

But for Lawson, his decision is clear.

"Their kids should make better choices, and that's the way I see it."

Back in 2002, there was a bill created to prohibit high school students from leaving campus but it did not pass in the state legislature. Right now, there are four counties in our region that do not allow off-campus lunches.
